
Why Does the Light Come On?

A simple flick of the light switch stops Dot in the hallway with a big question about the invisible world living inside the wires.
Dot had a question.
It started on a Tuesday evening, right at that purply time when the sky couldn't decide if it was day or night. She was padding through the hallway in her fuzzy socks when she reached up and flicked the light switch.

The hallway filled with warm, golden light.
Dot stopped. She looked at her finger, still touching the switch. She looked up at the light. She looked back at her finger.
"But... how?" she whispered.
She flicked it off. Click. Dark.
She flicked it on. Click. Light.
Off. On. Off. On. Off—
"Dot!" her dad called from the kitchen. "You're going to wear that switch out!"
Dot shuffled into the kitchen, where her dad was stirring something that smelled like tomatoes and Wednesday.
"Dad," she said, climbing onto her stool at the counter. "When I flip the switch, why does the light come on?"
"Electricity," her dad said, tapping the spoon on the pot.
"But what is that?" Dot pressed. "Where does it come from? Is it just sitting in the wall, waiting? Does it know I flipped the switch? How does it get up to the ceiling so fast?"
Her dad opened his mouth. Then he closed it. Then he opened it again.
"That," he said slowly, "is a really, really good question."
He turned off the stove and sat down next to her.
"Okay," he said. "Imagine something tiny. Tinier than a grain of sand. Tinier than a speck of dust. Tinier than the tiniest crumb of the tiniest cookie ever baked."
"That's pretty tiny," Dot agreed.
"Now imagine billions of those tiny things, all packed together inside the wires in our walls. They're called electrons."
Dot scrunched her nose. "Electrons. That sounds like a robot name."
"It does! But they're not robots. They're more like... imagine a really, really long line of kids standing in a hallway, shoulder to shoulder. Billions of them. Just standing there."
"That's a very long hallway," Dot said.
"The longest. Now—here's the thing. When you flip that switch?" Her dad leaned in close. "It's like opening a door at the end of that hallway and shouting GO!"
"And they run?"
"Not exactly. The first kid bumps into the second kid, who bumps into the third kid, who bumps into the fourth kid. Like dominoes! Nobody runs very far, but the bump travels fast. Super, super fast."
"How fast?"
Her dad's eyes went wide. "Almost as fast as light."
Dot's mouth dropped open. She knew how fast light was. Light was the fastest thing there was. Her teacher had said so.
"So the bump goes zooming through the wire," her dad continued, making a whooshing motion with his hand, "through the wall, up to the ceiling, and into the light bulb. And when all those tiny electrons start bumping and jiggling inside that little bulb, they make the thin wire inside get super hot. So hot it glows!"
"It glows because it's hot?"
"Yep! That glow is the light you see. All from a bunch of tiny things bumping into each other."
Dot sat very still for a moment. She stared at the kitchen light above them. Somewhere inside that smooth, white bulb, billions of things tinier than cookie crumbs were bumping and jiggling and making heat and light.
"But wait," she said, because Dot always had a but wait. "Where does the pushing start? Who pushes the first kid?"
Her dad grinned. "Now that is the really cool part. Follow me."
He took her hand and led her to the window. Outside, past the rooftops and the trees, Dot could see thick, dark power lines stretching across the sky like a giant's jump ropes.
"See those wires? Those go allllll the way back to a power plant. And at that power plant, there's something spinning. A huge machine called a generator. Think of it like a gigantic merry-go-round."
"I love merry-go-rounds," Dot said.
"Me too. Now, when this merry-go-round spins, it pushes those tiny electrons. It gives them their first bump. And that bump travels through the wires, down the street, up the pole, into our house, through our walls, and all the way to—"
"My light switch!" Dot shouted.
"Your light switch. And when the switch is off, it's like a broken bridge. The bump can't cross. But when you flip it on—"
"The bridge connects! And the bump goes through!"
Her dad pointed at her. "You just explained a circuit."
"A circuit?"
"A circle of wire that goes out and comes back. The electrons bump all the way to the light bulb and then bump all the way back. Round and round. A big loop. If the loop is broken—"
"No light."
"And if the loop is complete—"
"LIGHT!" Dot yelled, and she actually threw her hands up in the air.
Her dad laughed so hard he snorted, which made Dot laugh too, which made them both laugh until Dot got the hiccups.
After dinner—which turned out to be tomato soup, and it was delicious—Dot went back to the hallway. She stood in front of the light switch. She didn't flip it yet. She just looked at it.
She thought about the power plant far away, with its giant spinning merry-go-round. She thought about the bump traveling through miles and miles of wire, over poles, under streets, into her house, through her walls. She thought about billions of tiny electrons, all lined up like kids in the longest hallway ever, waiting for someone to shout GO!
She reached up.
Click.
The light came on. Warm and golden and bright.
But now it wasn't just light. It was a story. A story about a push that started far away and traveled through the dark, bumping and bumping and bumping, until it reached her ceiling and burst into something she could see.
"Thank you, tiny electrons," Dot whispered.
She could have sworn the light flickered, just a little. Just for a second. Like a wink.
The next morning at school, Dot's teacher, Ms. Reilly, asked if anyone had learned something interesting lately.
Dot's hand shot up so fast it almost left her body.
"Dot?"
"Did you know," Dot announced, standing up because some things simply cannot be said while sitting, "that when you turn on a light, you're really just letting billions of tiny things smaller than cookie crumbs bump into each other through a big loop, and the bump travels almost as fast as LIGHT, and it starts at a giant merry-go-round that might be MILES away, and the switch is like a BRIDGE, and—"
She was out of breath.
The class was staring.
"—and I think that's really cool," she finished.
Ms. Reilly smiled. "That is really cool, Dot. That might be the best explanation of electricity I've ever heard."
Dot sat back down, her cheeks warm and pink.
Her friend Milo leaned over. "Hey, Dot," he whispered. "If flipping a light switch is that complicated... what happens when you flush a toilet?"
Dot's eyes went wide.
She had a new question.
And if you knew Dot at all, you knew that a new question was her absolute favorite thing in the whole, entire, spinning, bumping, glowing world.
