Seal Rescue
Clover Cove Crew
Ages 3–5 · 6 min
A sleepy baby seal has fallen asleep on the boat ramp, blocking the whole marina. The fishing boats can't get out — and the mama seal is not happy. Blaze has a gentle idea to help.
The sun was a sleepy orange eye. It peeked over the ocean at Clover Cove.
CHUG-CHUG-CHUG.
The sun was a sleepy orange eye. It peeked over the ocean at Clover Cove.
CHUG-CHUG-CHUG.
The fishing boats were waking up. Their engines rumbled in the quiet morning. It was time to go out and catch fish for the town.
At the top of the hill, in the Lookout, Jake and the pups were just waking up, too.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
The big screen on the wall lit up. It was Mayor Pearlman. She looked very worried. Her seagull, Gerald, sat on her head.
"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" said the mayor. "The fishing boats can't get out!"
Jake looked at the screen. Down at the marina, a tiny baby seal was curled up on the boat ramp. It looked like a furry, speckled potato. It was fast asleep.
In the water, a bigger seal swam in circles. She kept bumping her nose against the dock.
THUMP!
The whole dock wiggled. That must be the mama seal.
Captain Briggs was there, too. His boat, the Sea Turtle, was stuck in its slip. "We can't get past without startling the little one!" he called.
Jake nodded. He knew what to do.
"This is a job for Splash!"
Splash wagged his tail. "Wheels or waves, let's go!"
"Bolt!"
Bolt grabbed his favorite wrench. "I can fix that!"
"And Blaze!"
Blaze jumped to his feet. He was so excited, his big paws got tangled up.
FWUMP!
He tumbled into a soft pile of blankets. "I'm good! I'm okay!" he woofed.
Jake smiled. "Crew, launch!"
WHOOSH!
Splash zipped down the line.
WHOOSH!
Bolt was right behind him.
WHOOSH!
Blaze landed last, with a happy bounce.
Splash jumped into his amphibious truck. Bolt hopped into his tow truck. Blaze scrambled into his fire truck.
VROOM! CLANG! RUMBLE!
The Clover Cove Crew raced down the hill to the marina.
When they got there, the baby seal was still asleep on the ramp. Her mama was still bumping the dock.
THUMP-THUMP!
The fishermen all stood with their hands on their hips.
Splash rolled his truck right to the edge of the water.
SPLOOOOSH!
His wheels folded up, and his truck turned into a boat. He floated quietly toward the ramp. He made a soft, questioning little bark.
The baby seal opened one eye. It looked at Splash. It yawned a big, pink yawn. And it went right back to sleep.
The mama seal bumped the dock even harder.
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
"Fun fact!" shouted Captain Briggs. "Harbor seals can't walk very well on their flippers. That little pup is too tired to wiggle back to the water!"
Jake thought for a moment. They couldn't push the seal. That would startle it. Bolt looked from his toolbox to Blaze's fire truck, his tail giving a little wag.
"If the seal can't go to the water," Jake said, "maybe we can bring the water to the seal."
He looked at Blaze. Blaze's tail gave a big thump-thump-thump against his fire truck.
Blaze aimed his water cannon at the top of the ramp. Not at the seal. Just at the ramp above it.
SHHHHHHHHH!
A gentle stream of water splashed onto the smooth ramp. It made the ramp shiny and wet. The water trickled down, down, down, right past the sleeping seal.
The baby seal felt the cool water on its tail. It wiggled.
The water made a little puddle around it. The ramp was slippery now.
The seal wiggled its nose. It gave a little push with its flippers.
SWOOOOSH.
It slid down just a little bit! Its eyes popped open. It looked surprised.
Splash, waiting in the water, gave another quiet bark.
The pup wiggled again.
SWOOOOOOOSH.
It slid a little farther this time. It looked at the water. It looked at its mama. She was watching with her big, dark eyes.
The pup gave one more big, happy wiggle.
SLIIIIIDE... SPLOOSH!
It landed in the water with a tiny splash. It swam right to its mama. They touched noses. Then, together, they swam out toward the open ocean.
All the fishermen cheered! Captain Briggs tipped his hat.
The boat ramp was clear.
RUMBLE. RUMBLE. RUMBLE.
One by one, the fishing boats chugged out of the marina, ready to catch fish for everyone in Clover Cove.
Captain Briggs patted Splash on the head. "Fun fact!" he said with a grin. "A baby seal is called a pup, just like you guys!"
"And these pups are ready for breakfast!" Jake said. Just then, a white feather drifted down onto Bolt's nose. SKRAWWWK! Gerald the seagull circled overhead, hoping for a snack. The pups all barked and laughed. It was time to go home.
